




Herding Cats: Professional Development
Overview
Herding Cats PD is a virtual professional development workshop created for middle and high school theatre teachers. This training provides a practical, production-based rehearsal management system that supports student-led rehearsals in acting, technical theatre, and stage management. Participants receive 7 CPE credits along with editable templates, downloadable modules, and lifetime access to updates—making it an ideal resource for building structure, engagement, and accountability in your drama program.

Herding Cats is thoughtfully designed to align with national and state theatre education standards. This production-based system supports fine arts educators by providing practical tools that promote student growth in key areas such as inquiry and understanding, creative expression, cultural and historical relevance, and performance evaluation. Whether students are engaging in acting, stage management, technical design, or theatre marketing, each module encourages active participation and mastery of standards-based learning outcomes. When implemented in a classroom or production setting, Herding Cats ensures that students are not only learning theatre—they’re demonstrating proficiency in the essential learning targets outlined by most state theatre education frameworks.

Workshop Schedule
9:00–9:15 AM: Introduction to Herding Cats and the virtual mock show process
9:15–10:00 AM: Rehearsal structure, weekly task assignment, student accountability, and grading practices
10:00–11:00 AM: Stage Management Module—training student stage managers and aligning with the production calendar
11:00–11:45 AM: Acting Module—keeping understudies and offstage actors engaged through character work
11:45 AM–12:30 PM: Technical Modules—lighting, costume, sound, and scenery with flagship activities
12:30–1:15 PM: Lunch Break
1:15–1:45 PM: Marketing development and executing a student-led marketing program
1:45–2:30 PM: Grading—rubric-based assessment aligned to module tasks and rehearsal performance
2:30–3:00 PM: Uploading modules to Google Classroom/Canvas (success criteria: posting 5 modules per discipline)
3:00–3:45 PM: Q&A, troubleshooting, and implementation work time with guided support
Format and Delivery
7-hour virtual workshop (plus Q&A and implementation support)
Includes downloadable modules, editable templates, and mock production materials
Participants will upload and implement their modules during the training
Certificate of completion provided for CPE credit
